2 Grooves on each shelf to provide a grip for the bottom if you want to display knives unfolded or tip down. Or, you can just lay the knives folded on the shelves flat. This would fit most pocket knives and folding knives but NOT ALL. If the knives are more than 1" thick, they are not going to fit.
